Curly Girl Method (CGM) in a Nutshell: Curly Girl, What?

CGM Mystery Debunked!

I spent endless nights scrolling Instagram. I absorbed every scrap of curl care info I could find. Of course, I was looking for natural ways! Until I stumbled upon the so well-known CGM: The Curly Girl Method.

TL;DR: The Curly Girl Method (CGM) in a Nutshell

The Curly Girl Method is about one thing: respecting your natural texture. By ditching harsh chemicals (sulfates/silicones) and heat, you allow your curls to hydrate and spiral naturally.

Glowrious Rule: Stop treating your hair like a greasy frying pan! Skip the dish soap and use a natural ACV rinse to clear buildup instead.

Curly Girl Method (CGM) Definition

CGM, or the Curly Girl Method (CGM), is a hair care approach specifically designed for curly hair.

Lorraine Massey introduced the method in her book Curly Girl: The Handbook.
It has since gained a massive following.

CGM is about embracing your natural curls. The goal? Minimize damage from chemicals, heat, and old-school habits.

The 8 Core Values of CGM (and Glowrious!)

1. Avoiding Sulfates & Harsh Detergents
Traditional shampoos use sulfates. These are harsh detergents. They strip your hair of the natural oils!
Curly hair tends to be drier, which results in frizz and a lack of shine.
The Curly Girl Method suggests using sulfate-free products.
At Glowrious, we advise you to ditch ALL the products that contain sulfates.

2. Silicone-Free Products
Silicones coat the hair to make it look shiny.
But they cause buildup over time. They have other toxic side effects, too!
In CGM, silicone-free products are recommended to prevent buildup and keep curls healthy.
At Glowrious, we advise you to ditch ALL the products that contain silicone.

3. No Heat Styling
Heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons damage the hair.
The Curly Girl Method encourages air-drying or using a
diffuser in a cool setting.

4. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair. Hydration is key.
The CGM focuses on using
moisture-rich conditioners and leave-ins to keep curls manageable.

5. Gentle Detangling
It is like gentle parenting, but for hair :P
The CGM suggests using a wide-tooth comb or fingers to detangle hair.
Only detangle while wet and slippery with conditioner. This prevents unnecessary breakage.

6. Defining Curls with Styling Techniques
CGM encourages specific styling techniques: scrunching, plopping, and finger coiling. These techniques help define curls without damaging them.

7. Regular Use of Deep Conditioners and Masks
To maintain healthy curls, the CGM suggests regular use of deep conditioners and hair masks. They help restore moisture and improve elasticity.

8. Preserving Curls Between Washes
This method also includes tips for refreshing and preserving curls between washes. Techniques like pineappling or using a satin pillowcase.
They help reduce frizz and maintain curl definition.

A Note from My Experience: The "Dish Soap" Myth

In the Lebanese CGM community, I've seen a heartbreaking trend: using dish soap on curls. They believe that it acts as a "final wash" to strip the sulfate coating.

I highly do not recommend this! Your hair is not a frying pan. Dish soap is far too aggressive for delicate curls.

The Glowrious Advice for Build-up:
You don’t need to "shock" your hair. Be patient. With the right organic products, that old coating fades away naturally. If you feel a lot of residue and want to speed up the process safely:

Try an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse: Dilute ACV with water and rinse your hair once a week for one month. It’s natural, pH-balancing, and much kinder to your curls.
